Lately, I've been pouring over my Home Edit bibles and scratching out lists for Target, Amazon, and The Container Store. While I was straightening and rethinking some of my storage options I began reevaluating what is working for me and what isn't, and during this whole process, I decided to share a few of the tricks that have been, for me, winning organizational hacks.
For years I have used an acrylic clear cube organizer to corral my makeup.
And since then, I have added to my system. I stay with clear acrylic products to have a uniform look that makes everything look prettier and coordinated.
Like these acrylic drawers that categorize, separate, and make it easy to see the lipgloss I am looking for. I like that they can be stacked vertically or horizontally.
I have all of my skincare products and makeup on the left side of the sink and hair products, supplements, and pampering items like face masks and peels on the right.
This is another area of the house where I incorporate small turntables.
But really? How much nicer would it look if I took the stickers off of the turntables? Sometimes I don't see things until I photograph them!
I had outlets put in the cabinets so a toothbrush and the Clarisonic could be charging while out of sight.
and this might look like a stack of drawers, but ...
it is actually one big drawer with built-in outlets for hairstyling tools.
Moving into the closet is where some of the best organizing hacks come together and I owe a lot of my storage solution successes to Ikea.
I have used these Ikea Lacks in multiple homes. They are beyond functional. You can set them horizontally on the floor as a bench and add baskets between the shelves or you can stand them vertically or even hang them on a wall as a storage option. Their clean modern lines allow them to easily double as an attractive display piece for some of your favorite items.
I also like to incorporate the Ikea Alex into my closet organization. I made sure to have the bar that accommodates my longer pieces raised a bit higher so that this storage unit would easily fit underneath and maximize this side of my closet. The Alex is usually featured as a staple in home offices but this little beauty is an all-around workhorse and I especially like it for jewelry organization. Check out my list of inserts at the bottom of this post for where to find some of the divided trays I have used here.
One of my favorite ways to store long necklaces is with these wall-mounted, clear acrylic pegs.
They disappear into the wall and the jewelry takes center stage.
I was fortunate to be able to design the layout of the closet and one of the best features is the adjustable shelving that can be spaced appropriately for various shoe heights or even further apart to accommodate baskets or totes.
This allowed me to use these canvas Ikea drawer organizers to contain belts and small accessories. They don't just work in drawers. Here they ARE the drawer.
Finally, onto the kitchen. We remodeled this space about four years ago and we had enough cabinets and drawers to designate one of them as an extra utensil drawer.
I also started rethinking the cabinetry. Obviously, pretty dishes and glassware just make sense in the glass front upper cabinets,
but this time around I also put dishes in some of the deep drawers that are within easy reach of the dishwasher.
I haven't done it yet, but I am hoping to add one of these peg style inserts so these lighter weight melamine dishes stay exactly where I want them.
This insert would work for dishes and for the pots and pans drawers as well.
I also like the adjustable bamboo drawer organizers for flatware. This drawer is particularly wide so it took two units but I like the finished look when I pull open this drawer.
I had hoped to share my laundry room organization hints as well but I am still waiting for some of my containers are taking longer than usual to arrive. So look for another organizing post soon. In the meantime, I have linked up some of the products I have used.
You're welcome.
Happy Organizing! Apparently, it is what the whole world is doing these days.
