A couple of years ago we rightsized down to a smaller home in the Midwest from our old home just blocks away. We have never regretted it. This smaller house is a second home for us. After we became Florida residents we recognized that maintaining the large family home we had lived in for over twenty years was much more house than we needed for our visits to see family and friends. The area we were hoping to move to is in high demand and it took us several years to score this property. We were so excited to finally purchase it but when we did we knew we had a major undertaking ahead of us and it would be a take it back to the studs level of remodel.
When we purchased the home there was a hall bath/laundry room set up. That layout wasn't good or what we wanted. So, after the eventual tear down of the interior walls, we redesigned the floorplan and created two separate rooms; a designated laundry room and this powder room.
I started with black walls using Benjamin Moore's Black Jack paint color.
The vessel sink and brushed gold, wall-mounted faucet were my splurge items. I indulged a bit here because these are impact elements that are not only seen but also functional.
To keep the costs within my budget I went with a quartz remnant for the countertop and a scaled-back version of my dream vanity cabinet.

The black and white Kate Spade sconces were also less than you might expect.
The vanity, though, gave me a few sleepless nights. I thought I had found the perfect piece but when I priced it out, I was shocked to learn that just that one cabinet would consume twenty percent of my cabinet budget for the entire house! I'll admit it, I like nice things. My husband says he is going to put that quote on my tombstone. LOL But, obviously, I had to rethink that vanity choice. I am glad I did because I am very happy with the much more reasonably priced floating cabinet I found from Dura Supreme. My guess is that because it is a divided cabinet with two doors instead of drawers the cost was considerably less. I do think that the textured doors and metallic paint finish help to lend this vanity a more upscale look.
Adding the simple gold European-style bar hardware brought in just enough bling for this clean-lined vanity cabinet.
Moving from a larger more traditional home to a smaller home with a more open floor plan and fewer walls left me with a bit of a good conundrum. Where to put all the art? Well, some of it ended up right here in the powder room. I think the black and white pieces and their gold frames are perfect here against the black walls.
Now we have a powder room/art gallery!
Add in a brushed gold towel bar, monogrammed towel, and a floral arrangement that gets changed out frequently and this room is complete. Anything more would start to look cluttered. Instead, it is dramatically distinctive.
