The Graduate 1967
In my previous post, I stated the obvious: At Our House, We Are Consuming More Alcohol.
It has been fun expanding our mixology skills but with those skills comes the need for more bar storage. Where to put the liquor? Where to put the barware? We came up with a temporary solution but it wasn't our end goal.
I guess this cabinet in the next photo was supposed to be our home's bar area. It was located in the dining room but it was too deep for the space so it encroached on the natural walkway through the room. Besides that, it was really rather ugly. I'm pretty sure it was painted with a broom. We tore it all out years ago.
We knew we didn't want a bar area in the living room but we did consider building onto the existing cabinetry in our dining room to create something along these lines...
Then we decided we preferred that our cocktail area be a part of the kitchen instead.
Sometimes it takes a while for a solution to come to me. We had been mulling over this dilemma for more than a year. Then one day I was standing in between the kitchen and the family room and it hit me. A light bulb went off.
It would attach to this jut-out wall and serve as a transition between the kitchen and the family room.
By only incorporating a base-style cabinet we wouldn't lose the view at the end of the family room
but the barware, liquor, and mixers would be where our gatherings always seem to end up: right there in the kitchen.
I envision this new cabinetry looking like a piece of furniture.
Maybe something like this but with a beachier-looking wood...
I am definitely leaning toward the idea of mixing some warm wood tones into this area.
But then I see this and I like it too.
I also like a bit of an edge on the top to contain any spills from going over the back of the cabinet onto our leather chairs.
Our built-in buffet will be laid out with three sets of double drawers.
Here is my amateur attempt at a concept drawing.
The middle set of drawers will actually be refrigerated drawers.
It will be great to store lemons, limes, and small bottles of tonic and club soda right there in the cabinet.
The two sets of drawers on either side of the refrigerated drawers would store liquor and glassware.
Ours will be drawers instead of rollouts but I'm requesting adjustable dividers to keep the liquor bottles from moving around.
So yes, our project has already begun. The refrigerated drawers arrived last week. Now we just need to decide on what finishes we want so our amazing kitchen design team can begin to work their magic.
